Graduates of the program will be prepared for careers in clinical practice and research, as well as for futures in higher education. Academic Aims Concordia's Master's program in Art Therapy trains students in the therapeutic use of art, allowing them to: 1) acquire knowledge in different theoretical models and clinical approaches in art therapy and psychology; 2) acquire knowledge of the principles of psychotherapy; 3) acquire and deepen clinical skills through a 2-year practicum (800 hours of supervised practice); 4) acquire skills and knowledge in culturally sensitive and ethical clinical and professional art therapy practice and research; 5) develop research and professional competencies inherent to the therapeutic use of art expression. Academic Training & Practicum Students are exposed to principles drawn from the fields of psychology and the visual arts through a variety of core courses and electives. Students also acquire skill in the practice of art therapy through practicum experiences and extensive supervision provided by experienced practitioners. This practical aspect of the curriculum is provided by student practicum placements in hospitals, health care, and educational institutions.
